AbstractInsulated shipping containers have long underpinned pharmaceutical air transport, delivering reliable thermal protection but often at a premium cost. As supply chains seek efficiency without compromising quality, alternative protection strategies demand rigorous, risk based evaluation. This presentation describes a case study that integrates laboratory thermal testing and monitored air shipments with thermal modeling to design a robust, cost conscious shipping strategy.

We first map the end to end process, identify failure modes leading to unacceptable temperature excursions, and define acceptance criteria tied to product stability. Laboratory profiles are used to characterize packaging materials and parameterize the model; targeted pilot shipments validate boundary conditions and operational assumptions. The calibrated model enables rapid scenario analysis across lanes, seasons, dwell times, and handling delays, quantifying residual risk and informing data driven controls.

Compared with traditional chamber plus field studies approaches, the combined methodology improves decision confidence while reducing the number of costly live trials. The work also surfaces practical considerations for planning pilots e.g., thermal data logger placement, preconditioning compliance, tarmac replication, and handoff timing that materially affect interoperability and execution success.

Outcomes include a risk stratified packaging selection framework, control plans aligned to critical process parameters, and documented cost avoidance from right sizing protection for specific lanes and seasons. Attendees will gain a repeatable approach for augmenting ISTA aligned testing with thermal modeling to accelerate qualification, strengthen cold chain control, and optimize total landed cost without sacrificing patient safety.

Abstract

Reliable Ambient Temperature Profiles (ATPs) are critical for qualifying cold chain packaging systems under realistic conditions. In this study, we developed multiple ATPs using temperature data collected from nine distinct shipping lanes representing diverse geographic and seasonal variability. Following ISTA PCG-04 Best Practice Guidelines, profiles were constructed using statistical approaches such as the empirical rule and area-under-the-curve (AUC) methodology. These newly derived ATPs were benchmarked against industry standards and existing UPS ATPs to assess alignment and identify potential gaps. Comparative analysis highlights whether current ATPs require updates and demonstrates how data-driven ATP development can enhance confidence in packaging qualification, reduce risk of temperature excursions, and improve regulatory compliance. This work underscores the importance of leveraging real-world lane data to refine qualification protocols and optimize thermal packaging performance.

AbstractAs the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) approaches implementation, most companies are focusing on primary packaging redesign and material reduction. However, smaller elements such as cable ties, tapes, strapping, and temporary bundling materials remain largely overlooked, despite their widespread use in transport packaging and logistics.

At the same time, the lack of standardized and transparent testing practices for these components presents a critical barrier to sustainable innovation. In many cases, similar solutions are tested using different methods such as varying drop heights, inconsistent vibration setups, or non-comparable load conditions which is making results difficult to interpret or benchmark. This often leads to overly conservative decisions, such as validating alternatives only on the heaviest or most demanding applications, limiting broader implementation potential.

This presentation explores how inconsistent testing approaches can hinder the adoption of more sustainable packaging components, even when viable alternatives exist. Through practical examples, it highlights how testing methodologies influence outcomes, risk perception, and ultimately material choices.

The session will also discuss how more harmonized and application-relevant testing approaches (aligned with packaging performance standards) can enable better decision-making, reduce unnecessary plastic use, and unlock sustainability gains without compromising product protection.

Attendees will gain insights into how small changes in both materials and testing strategies can significantly impact packaging system optimization and PPWR readiness.

15:00 - When Containment Force Isn't Enough: How Pre-Stretch and Dynamic Testing Decide Unit-Load Stability

Abstract

Containment force is widely used as a practical containment metric to judge stretch-wrap quality and, in many operations, as a primary go/no-go criterion for unit-load stability. While containment force is valuable, it does not always predict how a palletized load will behave under horizontal dynamic events typical of transport. In practice, loads can present “in-spec” containment force values yet still shift, deform or lose stability when subjected to horizontal acceleration and transient inputs—creating false confidence and inconsistent outcomes across sites. 

This presentation proposes an applied framework that keeps containment force as an important baseline indicator but avoids non-conclusive decisions by adding two critical elements. First, it emphasizes controlling film use through adequate pre-stretch and, when appropriate, operating beyond the film’s NDR region to reach a more stable, repeatable containment state. Second, it recommends confirming performance with horizontal dynamic tests representative of transport conditions, rather than relying on static containment force targets alone. 

The outcome is a more robust, transport-performance-oriented evaluation approach: clarifying when containment force is informative and when it becomes ambiguous, and showing how combining pre-stretch/NDR control with dynamic validation helps packaging teams reduce variability, improve repeatability, and avoid non-conclusive acceptance decisions based solely on containment force —ultimately reducing the risk of in-transit failures despite “passing” containment-force targets.

Pass/fail testing is widely used as the final approval process for packaging. The outcome is binary and that simplicity hides what matters most: how much performance margin actually exists against reality, where a design is vulnerable, or how much material is present without purpose.

This blind spot cuts both ways. Packages can pass recognised test protocols and still fail in distribution when handling intensity, stacking behaviour, or logistics conditions differ from what is assumed. At the same time, laboratory tests can be more severe than real life, meaning additional safety margins are added simply to ensure a pass. A “PASS” tells us that survival was achieved in the lab but not how far from failure the system in reality is.

This session argues that the real issue is not testing intensity, but information loss. Impact response, deformation behaviour, performance under compression, and vibration sensitivity are measurable, repeatable signals that already exist and can be translated into meaningful test data. When ignored, they collapse into a single yes/no verdict; when used, they reveal margin‑to‑failure and true performance gradients. Rather than replacing existing protocols, this session challenges the comfort of pass/fail thinking. A controlled failure measurement that reveals margin, sensitivity, and design limits is more informative than a passing test result without numbers, which simply hides over‑engineering. The goal is not weaker packaging, but better‑informed packaging decisions, based on observed risk behaviour rather than assumption.

AbstractThe transition towards a circular economy requires a fundamental redesign of packaging systems through the 3R framework: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. While the associated environmental benefits are clear, complex challenges regarding consumer safety, supply chain traceability, and product integrity are risen, particularly during the critical phases of storage and transport.

Analytical chemistry aimed at the identification of potential contaminants helps to face these challenges. Reduction strategies, involving new materials or bio-based substrates, require rigorous screening to ensure that barrier properties remain intact and no harmful degradation products are formed, also during variation of environmental conditions in logistics. Recycling processes rely on fingerprinting to detect contaminants, ensure the purity of secondary raw materials, and help in material traceability. Finally, Reuse models need advanced analytical protocols to ensure decontamination efficiency and verify if the capacity of the packaging to protect the product is maintained over multiple usage cycles and prolonged storage periods.

In conclusion, the integration of different analytical techniques is indispensable to monitor the chemical safety and traceability of innovative materials with the aim to protect the consumer, secure the supply chain, and guarantee product integrity, from production to final delivery.

AbstractEconomic activity in European cities generates many small-volume deliveries, often limited to one or two pallets for businesses and tradespeople. While goods are transported between cities by trucks, urban deliveries are usually completed by vans. These vehicles frequently navigate roundabouts and sharp turns, creating significant horizontal forces on palletized loads. If pallets are not properly secured, these forces can deform packages, damage goods, and lead to delivery refusals.

The research work focuses on measuring and analyzing the horizontal stresses experienced by pallets during real urban transport conditions and linking these stresses to observed load deformations. The findings will provide a foundation for developing laboratory protocols capable of reproducing these transport conditions and improving pallet securing methods.

11:00 - Global Reuse Study - Semiconductor Capital Equipment Crates

AbstractASM globally ships hundreds of tons of crating material annually to deliver our products. All were disposed. In support of ASM’s corporate sustainability goal of NetZero GHG by 2035, our objective was to determine how to engineer crates that protect our products and support reuse.
 
Initiating such a program involves benchmarking and identifying/negotiating detailed reuse costs without compromising product protection/quality given its value. Can a cost neutral or minimal investment be made to realize crate reuse?
 
Additional challenges include mixed customer acceptance, a need for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data to measure the environmental impact, and corporate ESG alignment. Will customers collaborate to ensure mutual sustainability objectives are met?
 
Crate designs align with ISTA 3B protocol as a design KPIV, MIL standard construction, IPPC compliance, support ease/safe assembly/disassembly. The designs also consider ease of refurbishment, commonly available hardware to minimize crate damage when closing/opening, and simple ratchet strapping for secured returns.
 
Reverse logistics required a fourth party logistics (4PL) partner to manage the logistics through consolidation and stabilizing crate cost following a “crating as a service” approach. Using this model, ASM’s global crate reuse objective is viable.
 
A total of 642 MT of supplier and customer crating material were landfill diverted through 2025.
 
PPWR-Ready Semiconductor Packaging Strategy focus is crate reuse due to SEMI and customer packaging standards for large capital equipment. Recycling content opportunity focus is primary bagging of the product, but must consider cleanroom and high-moisture barrier needs.

13:30 - Draft Test Blocks for Drop Testing from Field Data: Profile Generation and Verification

AbstractThe aim of transport testing in the laboratory is to help design and evaluate the packaging. For this, the test protocol has to be representative of conditions encountered during transport and be able to reproduce the damages. This study will present the results of the analyses of field data of drop/shock collected from decoy packages transported in USA and China.
 
The aim of the study has been threefold: (a) review of the existing reduction techniques for converting shock/drop data into laboratory test protocols, (b) propose a suitable workflow for translating field data into laboratory test protocols, (c) verify the proposed new test protocols against existing protocols and where possible against the field data.
 
To this end, we first evaluate the field data based on the existing ISTA data analysis guidelines (based on Sheehan’s method). We conclude that this results in rather harsh test profiles that is not representative of real world conditions. We propose modifications and generate profiles which could better represent the field data. These profiles are then verified in the laboratory setting using decoy packaging similar to the ones used during field data collection. This is done partly by comparing the damage incurred by the packages when tested with the generated profiles (including ISTA 3A), and partly by comparing the damage observed in the laboratory to that in the field. The damage evaluation utilises RISE damage coefficient method that provides a somewhat objective means of comparing the damage incurred during testing of the different profiles.

AbstractThe rapid growth of GLP-1 therapies is transforming last-mile pharmaceutical distribution. In this interactive workshop, participants will act as the management team of a new European e-pharmacy and develop a distribution strategy for temperature-sensitive products. Working in small groups, they will define packaging requirements, evaluate active and passive solutions, compare courier networks, and balance GDP compliance, sustainability, customer experience, and total cost of ownership. As new information is introduced during the session, teams will refine their decisions and present their final supplier selection. The workshop demonstrates that there is no single best solution—only the best fit for a company's strategy.

15:00 - Beyond the UN Mark: Characterizing Package-Level Fire Performance for DDR Lithium Battery Shipments

AbstractDamaged, defective, and recalled (DDR) lithium-ion units that pose risk of dangerous evolution of heat, fire, or short circuit ship by ground and sea under packing instructions P911 and LP906, governed by UN Special Provision 376 with parallel provisions in ADR, IMDG, TDGR SP 137, and 49 CFR § 173.185(f). Air transport is forbidden. The framework qualifies the outer package against drop, stack, and pressure, and leaves quantitative fire performance to competent authority discretion. No major framework currently requires it.

This presentation addresses that single question. Using a recent DDR project routed under EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 and ADR, the session walks through what was instrumented at the package boundary during induced runaway of NMC cells, what the temperature, vent gas, and flame data showed, and how those results changed the inner packaging design that ultimately shipped. The framing is not what the regulation requires but what the package actually does, with the gap between the two as the working subject.

  2. What package-level instrumentation actually captures during a runaway event, and what it misses

There is growing demand for the safe transport of pharmaceuticals, life science and healthcare products as well as chilled and frozen foods; in particular there has recently been a rapid increase in last-mile delivery of cold chain pharmaceuticals.

A profession in the development of temperature-controlled packaging requires knowledge drawn from a broad range of scientific disciplines, ranging from thermodynamics, materials science, chemistry as well as a growing need for an understanding of sustainability. However, it is an under-recognised field for scientists at the beginning of their career.

The ISTA Pharma Committee is committed to advancing the industry through collaboration, and the development of partnerships between businesses and academic institutions can help spread awareness of the availability of careers in this sector while developing innovative solutions through collaborative research.

This talk will discuss the success of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between an insulated packaging company and a multidisciplinary research group, and how it utilised expertise in the textile industry to improve insulated packaging solutions and resulted in a rewarding career developing temperature-controlled packaging.

PhD. Manuel García-Romeu is the Product Development Manager at Safe Load Testing Technologies and a recognized expert in packaging engineering, transport simulation, load stability, and multiaxial vibration.

He plays a highly active role in international standardization. Manuel is a member of the technical committee of the EUMOS 40509/2012 standard and serves as Chairman of the drafting committee for EUMOS 40509.

In addition, he represents Spain as an expert within UNE (Spanish Association for Standardization), DIN Organization – CEN / TC 119 / WG 07, and AEN / CTN 49: Containers and Packaging – GT3 (Evaluation of packaging for transportation).

Bill Green is a Distinguished Engineer and Chief Technologist for Supply Chain Optimization, Sustainability, and Protection at IBM Corporation. In this role, he leads enterpriseâ€â€˜scale initiatives spanning distribution, packaging engineering, testing, damage reduction, compliance, and sustainability, with a strong focus on dataâ€â€˜driven decisionâ€â€˜making and advanced digital technologies.
Bill's was the on the ISTA Global Board of Directors for about 10 years, with several years on the Executive Board, and recently rotated off the board at the end of his term. His work bridges realâ€â€˜world packaging operations with emerging capabilities such as automation, AI, and digital threads, enabling companies to improve performance while reducing cost, waste, and risk.
Bill is an IBM Master inventor with 35 Issued patents and several more filed with the USPTO. He is passionate about ISTA, Packaging, and Innovation.

David Jin


David Jin is APAC Regional Director of PPT Group, with responsibility for Lansmont in China. Lansmont, part of PPT Group, specializes in environmental data recording, shock and vibration testing and Field-to-Lab applications. David has an aerospace industry background and more than 30 years’ experience in environmental and reliability testing, with particular expertise in shock and vibration. He began working with the packaging industry in 2000 and joined Lansmont in 2007. An active ISTA member for 19 years, David has supported ISTA test technology and the application of Lansmont’s Field-to-Lab methodology across the region. Matt has a Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging from San Jose State University in California. Matt began his career in packaging right out of college working for Sealed Air Corporation. Over 29 years at Sealed Air, Matt started out as a Packaging Engineer and Packaging Design & Test Lab Manager. He worked his way up from there into many different positions in global marketing, business management, product development, digital transformation and research & development. Matt now works for ISTA focusing on development and growth of ISTA’s education and digital platforms. Matt’s career in the packaging industry began in 1991 in California. He relocated with his family to Connecticut in 2000 where he lived for 16 years before relocating again to North Carolina in 2016 where he still lives today.

Brian holds a Master of Administrative Science degree from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Brian has nearly 20 years of trade association management experience addressing packaging industry issues in a wide variety of areas, including technical, environmental, health, safety, RFID, competing materials, and sustainability. He also has notable experience within the global food and beverage packaging technologies space. As ISTA’s Vice President of Research, Brian plays a critical role in establishing and executing the association’s long-range strategy and vision for research programs.

He manages the ISTA Standards Council including all technical activities, development and maintenance of ISTA Procedures and Projects, and ISTA Certification programs for labs, packaged-products and people. With a strong focus on innovation, Elin is also in charge of and actively involved in research projects centered on corrugated board, pushing the boundaries of material performance and design.

Prashanth Srinivasa


Prashanth Srinivasa is a senior researcher in the division of Bioeconomy at RISE in Stockholm. His background is in Sound & Vibrations and Solid Mechanics. He works mainly on the mechanics of fibre based materials utilising both experimental and numerical methods. His primary interest is in fibre-based materials, particularly material structure & material property interactions and the mechanics therein. He has worked on the multi-scale mechanics of cellulose based porous materials, mechanics of 3D fibre networks, fracture mechanics of low-density cellulose fibre networks and bio-based composites, and dynamical testing. He is mostly motivated by understanding the underlying mechanisms that define the mechanical property space of new sustainable fibre-based materials and thereby to contributing to their improved performance.

Maarten Kleverlaan is responsible for Topa Thermal's technical service, while problem-solving and innovating solutions to meet the thermal packaging needs of customers in the life sciences cold chain. Maarten has more than 20 years' experience in packaging design and development, and simulating the physical and thermal distribution tests experienced by a package during transport. His particular focus is reducing CO2 impact, optimising thermal packaging solutions to reduce waste and cost, and designing, testing and validating for total cost of ownership. This includes looking at packing time and design simplicity, size of container as well as optimising suitability and performance of packaging design throughout a product's journey from manufacture to last mile and patient. Maarten has a Post Graduate diploma in Industrial Engineering & Management and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is an ISTA Technician and Technologist, an established trainer on insulated packaging and testing, and serves on several technical and industry committees including PDA, IATA, ISTA and Pharma.Aero.
