Event Description
Laboratory Techniques to Simulate Dunnage Used in the LTL Distribution Environment

Dunnage materials are widely used in the less than truckload (LTL) shipping environment, due to the wide array of freight handled on a daily basis. While the dunnage is designed to restrict the motion of freight, in doing so, it can sometimes damage the freight as a result of certain events (shocks and vibration hazards) occurring during shipment.

The premier transport test standard for simulating general LTL transport is ISTA Procedure 3B. This standard exposes packaged products, both individual and unitized, to different transport hazards commonly experienced by this mode of transport. While the test standard challenges the freight to different laboratory simulated hazards, missing from the standard is the interaction between freight and dunnage material.  It was this identified gap that led to the formation of a workgroup to investigate the interaction during shock and vibration events.

This webinar will provide an overview of the workgroups progress towards development of a test method(s) including investigate work conducted at university partners RIT and Clemson.

Webinar Speakers:

Eric Hiser
Vice President of Standards & Certification
ISTA

Eric Hiser is Vice President of Standards & Certification at International Safe Transit Association (ISTA). He manages the ISTA Standards Council including all technical activities, development and maintenance of ISTA Procedures and Projects, and ISTA Certification programs for labs, packaged-products and people. Eric is a graduate of the Michigan State University School of Packaging with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Packaging. He is an IoPP  Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) and has an extensive background in transport packaging performance testing as well as developing packaging for the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) market. He stays involved in the packaging community through participation on industry groups such as the industrial advisory board for Packaging Science at RIT.

Kyle Dunno
Assistant Professor
RIT – Packaging Science Program

Kyle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Packaging Science at RIT. His research interests focus on the area of transport packaging, specific to the fundamental characterization of vehicle dynamics and the design of package and unit load systems. Before joining RIT, he held positions with Atlantic Packaging and Sealed Air Corporation focusing on unit load integrity and product protection. He has over a decade of experience in package and unit load testing, with extensive academic research and industry projects focused on the characterization of the transport environment. Kyle is an ISTA CPLP – Professional and is the Chair of the Certification Council.

Jim Bisha
Manager - Packaging Optimization
Chainalytics LLC

Jim Bisha is a Manager in the Packaging Optimization practice at Chainalytics. His former research and professional positions have focused on understanding the distribution environment and application of tertiary packaging. In his current role, Jim lends his expertise to client's challenges that encompass the 3 levels of packaging and supply chain dynamics. He also contributes to the industry by actively serving on technical committees of both ASTM and ISTA.  Jim has an undergraduate degree from R.I.T. and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

Brennan Lytle
Research Associate
Clemson University

Brennan Lytle is a Research Associate in the Packaging Science Department at Clemson University. He manages and operates Clemson’s Package Dynamics Laboratory. He received his B.S. in Food Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2016. Prior to his position at Clemson, he worked in campus ministry and at an upstate South Carolina food manufacturer. When away from work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Melissa, and son Cooper.
